MEXICO Metropolis — Mexico’s president posted a picture on his social media accounts Saturday showing what he claimed appeared to be a mythological woodland spirit identical to an elf.
President Andrés Manuel López Obrador did not appear to be joking when he posted the photo of an “Aluxe,” a mischievous woodland spirit in Mayan folklore.
López Obrador wrote the photograph “was taken three times in the past by an engineer, it seems to be an aluxe,” adding “everything is mystical.”
The nighttime photograph displays a tree with a department forming what looks like a halo of hair, and what could be stars forming the figure’s eyes.
López Obrador has extensive expressed reverence for indigenous cultures and beliefs. Engineers and staff are in the Yucatan peninsula, developing a vacationer train that is the president’s pet job.
