REVIEW – I love the tandem OLED screen on my iPad Pro 11-inch. Content and whatever I see on the iPad is so vibrant and rich. I was not looking forward to dulling the screen by putting a matte screen protector on it in order to have a better experience using the Apple Pencil once in a while. I only want that texture when using the Apple Pencil, not all the time. I use the Pencil 10-20% of the time. I had never tried any of the magnetic screen protectors, so I was eager to try the ESR Magnetic Drawing Screen Protector. I’m a fan! Read on to find out why.

Design and features
The biggest reason for me reviewing the ESR Magnetic Drawing Screen Protector was the promise of quickly placing the screen protector on when I needed it instead of having it on all the time. I only use my Apple Pencil about 10%-20% of the time and don’t need the screen covered the other 80% of the time. The screen of the latest iPad Pro is so good that I want to enjoy it at full strength.
The ESR Magnetic Drawing Screen Protector attaches to the longer sides of the iPad magnetically. It’s a perfect fit – so be aware if you have a protective case (like the one supplied by ESR down below), you’ll need to get it aligned perfectly or else one of the edges may not properly adhere and throw off the accuracy of the Apple Pencil. On a bare iPad, it’s a little more forgiving.

When not in use, simply store the screen protector in the included protective envelope. It’s a good idea to have something more sturdy to hold and carry the ESR Magnetic Drawing Screen Protector when not in use. It will help it from getting too dirty, and it’s more manageable to store. As with anything that is removable, I needed to remember to pack the screen protector in my bag, or if I was on the couch browsing on my iPad and then wanted to start drawing or taking notes, I needed to go into the other room and retrieve the protector. Yes, I understand that’s the trade-off with having a removable screen protector, but it’s still a use case that you’ll need to consider.

Having a reusable screen protector for only the times when needed is a great idea and I think ESR’s implementation is about as good as it gets.
Assembly, Installation, Setup
Installation was easy. Use the supplied cleaning kit to clean the screen and then peel off the protective strips from the magnetic strips. The toughest part is getting the alignment spot on. Anything magnetic tends to require a little more patience. But after a couple of times, I was able to get the ESR Magnetic Drawing Screen Protector on perfectly.

Performance
The ESR Magnetic Drawing Screen Protector works really well! The magnets are strong enough not to slip even when resting your palm on the device. I was able to detach and reattach the screen protector several times without feeling like there was a degradation of magnetic attraction.
The feel of using the Apple Pencil with the screen protector on is considerably better; there is more feedback and inspires more confidence when drawing or writing. The bare display or a tempered glass protector feels slippery when using the Apple Pencil.

The matte finish dramatically cuts down the glare and reflection from ambient lighting. Although there is a noticeable haze, I was able to help compensate by boosting the brightness of the iPad.
And More
ESR was kind enough to asol include a couple more items to review.
The ESR Shift Series Magnetic Case is kind of like a Swiss Army knife – it can do so much! The case is two pieces: one protective case for the iPad, and the other is the stand. They connect magnetically, vertically and horizontally! I use the Magic Keyboard, and that’s a feature that I wish would be implemented. And the iPad in the protective case can attach higher on the stand (about 3.3 inches higher) for better visibility. I found this useful when using the iPad as a second screen with my laptop or when taking video calls. The extra height puts the camera more at eye level and is much more pleasing of an angle for video calls. On the back of the stand, there is an elastic pocket for storing the Apple Pencil. I appreciate this as most of the time my Pencil ends up on the bottom of my bag. The Apple Pencil can also still attach and charge through the protective case as well. The stand has two flaps to angle the iPad. The larger flap can adjust to 6 different angles (30º to 75º), great for viewing or reading content. Whereas the small flap (nearest the rear camera lens) adjusts for 3 different angles (15º to 25º)for writing or drawing. I like the fact that I can detach the iPad from the stand and still have it protected. The only criticism that I have is that with so many different folding options, the case seems a little ‘loose looking’, meaning that there will be some play or give around the flaps. This case is what I would use when not using the Magic Keyboard.

The ESR Armorite Series Ultra-Tempered-Glass Screen Protector (whew, what a name!) comes bundled in a 2-pack. It’s stated to have “Military Grade Protection” MIL-STD-810H 516.8. After a little research, this is drop and shock compliance certification. ESR states that the screen protector can survive a 6.5-foot drop of a 64g steel ball – impressive! The screen protector offers full screen protection, fingerprint resistance, 3-year glass scratch resistance, is highly responsive, and has HD clarity. Application of the ESR Armorite Series Ultra-Tempered-Glass Screen Protector seems easy and, according to ESR, ‘a bubble-free application’. In the box is a tray to place the screen protector, then your iPad face down. While pressing down on the iPad, pull the tab that removes the backing of the screen protector, and the result should be perfect alignment and no bubbles. I did not try this as I use the Magic Keyboard and with the MagEasy Cover Buddy, and using a screen protector is not recommended. Another reason for the ESR Magnetic Drawing Screen Protector is that it’s detachable! Bonus….if you do install the glass screen protector, the magnetic drawing protector will still work. It could be the best of both worlds.

Final thoughts
The ESR Magnetic Drawing Screen Protector is everything that I need. It allows me to experience the full, unfiltered performance of the iPad screen, and when I need to draw or write, I simply snap the protector on and enjoy the textured feedback when using the Apple Pencil. I do like that it comes with a protective envelope for storage. I am curious to see how long the magnets and screen hold up, as well as how often I’ll forget to take it with me. It’ll be another thing that I need to remember to put in my bag or go get from the other room. But I’m thrilled with this product!

ESR unexpectedly included the Shift Series Magnetic Case and Armorite Ultra-Tempered-Glass Screen Protector as well, much to my delight and surprise. I think all three items used in conjunction would offer an outstanding level of protection and usefulness. They all work seamlessly together. I would strongly suggest that you look into the Shift Series Magnetic Case; it’s that useful and well designed!
